Building skills for Rwanda’s energy sector

Understanding the skills needs in the energy sector in Rwanda

Polar Partners together with its partner organizations conducted a situational analysis of the energy sector training needs in Rwanda. The aim of the analysis was to collect up-to-date information about the energy sector training programs provided in Rwanda and define current needs of the companies within the sector.

The analysis drew on data collected by a combination of methods: a benchmarking study, an online industry survey tailored to specific industry partners, institutions and companies, and an onsite visit to Rwanda to meet with and interview selected training institutions and industry partners.

Targeted industry survey

The analysis was supported by an industry survey which provided valuable, more specific information about the needs of the companies in the energy sector. The aim of the survey was to receive feedback from the industry that would help in ensuring that the program matches authentic needs. The survey results revealed an urgent need for skills development, both on the vocational and bachelor’s level as well as via shorter training. Promoting lifelong learning must be at the center in order to enhance graduates’ transferable skills and learning to learn skills as well as ensuring acquisition of new industrial skills and trends.
